India bans social media

Authorities in Indian-administered Kashmir on Thursday announced a month-long ban on social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and YouTube.
Internet service providers have been asked to block 22 social networking sites with immediate effect “in the interest of maintaining public order,” an order from the Jammu and Kashmir government said.
Any violation would result in legal action, said the order from the state government’s Home Department.
An increasing trend had been noticed of social media and instant messaging sites being misused to transmit “unverified objectionable and inflammatory material and content” that was inciting violence, the order said.
Several graphic videos showing abuse by security forces and attacks on them have gone viral on social networking sites, leading to widespread clashes in the militancy-affected state.

El-Rufai supported Muslim/Muslim ticket, he wanted Fashola as Buhari’s mate – Fani-Kayode

Former Minister of Culture and Tourism, Femi Fani Kayode, has countered the claim by a national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu on why Muhammadu Buhari didn’t pick him as his running mate in 2015.
Tinubu had revealed that Senate President, Bukola Saraki and Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, stopped the President from picking him as his running mate in the 2015 presidential election.
Tinubu’s claims were contained in a book titled ‘Against the Run of Play,’ written by the Chairman, Editorial Board of ThisDay, Olusegun Adeniyi.
He said their reason was that Christians in the North would not accept a Muslim-Muslim ticket.
“What they (Saraki and others from the PDP) did behind my back was wrong. We always do things as a group. By the time they joined, we were already too far ahead in our processes but we accommodated them.
“We agreed to take their state structures and subsume them into the party and they all had their opportunity to nominate the candidates of their choices for different political offices.
“But they went behind to instigate Buhari and some other people in the party against me on the pretext of religion. That was not right. They were canvassing arguments that the Christians in the North would not vote for a Muslim-Muslim ticket,” Tinubu had said.
Reacting however, Fani-Kayode in a Facebook post on Thursday, said El Rufai had wanted Buhari to pick Fashola, former Lagos governor as his running mate.
He wrote, “The Muslim/Muslim ticket was their plan all along and I was the first to expose and oppose it when I was in APC. That is why I left them.
“Obasanjo opposed it too. Saraki did so behind the scenes. El Rufai did not oppose a Muslim Muslim ticket. It is just that he didn’t want Tinubu. He wanted Fashola.
‘I discussed this matter deeply with every single name that I mentioned here when I was with them. The whole thing sickened me.”

EFCC cautions ex-Jonathan’s aide, Reno Omokri against anti-Buhari comments

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has cautioned former Special Adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on New Media, Reno Omokri over his antagonistic comments against President Muhammadu Buhari-led government.
EFCC made the remark while reacting to a comment by Omokri, saying “Ghost President, with ghost achievements fighting ghost workers with an EFCC that goes after his ghost monies in apartments owned by ghosts.”
Omokri, a United State based Pastor has remained one of the fierce critics of the current administration.
Reacting to the comment, the anti-graft agency noted that Omokri could be President someday and so he should respect those ahead of him.
In a tweet on its twitter handle, on Thursday, the anti-graft agency noted that while Omokri is entitled to his opinion and could criticize the government’s policies, he should note that the least the president of any country deserves is respect of its citizens.
The tweet reads, “Reno it’s your prerogative to disagree with a public official, an institution or even the President but that office must be respected.
“You may find yourself in that position someday and the least you would expect of anybody is respect.”

Eugenie Bouchard on Maria Sharapova return: "I don't think a cheater should be allowed to play that sport again"

Eugenie Bouchard has blasted Maria Sharapova as a "cheater" who should have no place in tennis.
Sharapova made her official return to action on Wednesday, for her first match since the 2016 Australian Open, amid much media manipulation from her camp and sponsors.
The return of the five-time Grand Slam champion is not seen as good for the sport by everyone however - in particular world No.59 Bouchard, who didn't hold back.
"I don't think it's right. She's a cheater and I don't think a cheater in any sport should be allowed to play that sport again," she told TRT World.
"It's so unfair to all the other players who do it the right way and are true.
"I think from the WTA it sends the wrong message to young kids 'cheat and we'll welcome you back with open arms'.
"I don't think that's right and she's definitely not someone I can say I look up to anymore because it's definitely ruined it for me a little bit."
Sharapova beat Italian Robera Vinci on her first competitive appearance since her drug ban. Sharapova was hit with a 15-month suspension after testing positive for meldonium.
But despite being broken on her first serve never looked in any trouble during her 7-5 6-3 win over world No. 36 Vinci at the Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart.

Ooni of Ife VS Oba Akionlu: Apologize or incur ancestors’ wrath – Kingdom warns Rilwan

The palace of the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has reacted to the snub of the monarch by the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, a public function in Lagos on Tuesday.
On Thursday, the Head of Palace Directorate of Tourism, Awoyemi Tunde, told newsmen on behalf of Ife Kingdom and elders, that the Ooni of Ife was not losing sleep over the issue.
“It is not a slap on the Ooni of Ife but rather a slap on the Oba of Lagos,” he said.
“The stool of Oba of Lagos was founded by Olofin Ogunfunminire and the Ooni of Ife is the Oba of Yoruba land.
“The Oba of Lagos has to come to terms with the fact that Ooni is the royal father of Yorubaland, it is necessary that all persons come together to unite Yoruba land but really the issue at the event is very condemnable”.
Tunde also said that the Oba of Lagos risked the wrath of the ‘Alale’ (Ancestors), as a result of his disrespect for the superior monarch.
“God gave Ooni of Ife Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, the mandate to unite the Yoruba land and nothing will stop him from doing that,” he added.
According to Tunde, reactions from different Yoruba communities would continue to pour in to denounce the action of the Lagos monarch.
“If we don’t receive an apology especially with the image of Ile-Ife, we will call on the ancestors on the issue,” the official added.

Babangida reveals how US invited 12 northern governors to remove Jonathan

More revelations have emerged on the alleged conspiracy of the US in the electoral defeat of former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.
Jonathan had claimed that former American President Barack Obama, was responsible for his loss.
Jonathan had said, “President Barack Obama and his officials made it very clear to me by their actions that they wanted a change of government in Nigeria and we’re ready to do anything to achieve that purpose. They even brought some naval ships into the Gulf of Guinea in the days preceding the election.”
Meanwhile, the US has since denied the allegation, insisting that Jonathan lost the election because Nigerians wanted him out.
In an advance copy of ‘Against the Run of Play’, a book written by Segun Adeniyi, Babangida Aliyu, former Niger state governor and ex-chairman of the Northern Governors Forum, gave a hint of possible US involvement in the electoral defeat of Jonathan.
He said the Obama administration invited 12 northern governors to the US to ascertain their level of commitment to removing Jonathan.
Aliyu said, although he had no proof of this, but expressed the belief that the reason for their invitation to the US was deeper than discussing the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria.
“I have no proof of course, but I think the idea was to ascertain what the disposition of the north would be to the idea of another term for President Jonathan.
“That was my reading of the situation. I believe it was all about the 2015 election for which the Americans had resolved not to support Jonathan. They just wanted to size us up for the level of commitment to regime change,” Aliyu said.
Aliyu said in one of the sessions, Murtala Nyako, former Adamawa state governor, accused Jonathan of sponsoring Boko Haram with the intent of destroying the north.
He added that Nyako’s accusation signalled to the Americans that the north was not in support Jonathan’s re-election bid.
“If Jonathan had been clever enough to say he would not run and had stuck with the PDP zoning formula by supporting a young northern candidate, I am most certain Buhari would have shelved his ambition to contest in 2015, knowing there was no way he would win,” he said.
The book, which details how Jonathan lost the 2015 election, will be launched on Friday.

How I warned Jonathan of Northern conspiracy that led to his defeat – David Mark

A former Nigeria’s Senate President, David Mark, has said that ex-President, Goodluck Jonathan was too blind to see during the 2015 general elections.
Senator mark said he warned Jonathan of the conspiracy against him in the north before he lost the 2015 presidential elections.
Mark said this in the book, “Against the Run of Play: How an Incumbent President was defeated in Nigeria, written by the Chairman of ThisDay Editorial Board, Olusegun Adeniyi.
He said that he saw the defeat coming and had pointed out the unrealistic voting projections made by the party about the North to the former president and the conspiracy against him but he was not taken seriously.
According to him, “I saw it and at different times, I pointed out to him and the party that the projections being made by some people around the president about what the voting pattern in the north would were wrong.
“I could see the conspiracy and the gang-up building up in the north against the aspiration of Jonathan but my voice was drowned out by those who took it for granted that a sitting president, and one from PDP, could not lose.
“Some people were deceiving the president with the kind of false scenarios they were painting for him. The VP could see the conspiracy but I don’t know how much influence he had on the campaign. Why Jonathan couldn’t see it until it was too late is what I find difficult to understand.”

Jega replies Jonathan on comments over conduct of 2015 election

Former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman Prof. Attahiru Jega, has replied ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, over comments he made concerning the 2015 general elections.
Jonathan in a book, Against the Run of Play, written by ThisDay Editorial Board Chairman, Olusegun Adeniyi, expressed disappointment with how Jega conducted the election.
Reacting though his Special Assistant, Prof Mohammed Kuna, Jega disagreed with Jonathan’s belief that the wide margin between the presidential election and National Assembly results in Kano State was a reflection of a flawed election.
The former President said it was strange that the state recorded 1.8 million votes in the presidential poll and 800,000 in the National Assembly election on the same day.
But Prof Kuna dismissed Jonathan’s claims and insisted that the introduction of the card reader made it difficult to manipulate elections and inflate results.
“There is nothing particularly special about the Kano result; it is a general trend as many voters were more interested in the presidential election than in other elections. That was what happened across the country and you can go and do the tabulation.
“With the card reader, it is no longer possible to return results that are higher than the accredited voters. If you analyse the results nationally, you will discover the same trend.”
Meanwhile, Senator Abubakar Girei, who represented Adamawa Central Senatorial Zone from 1999 to 2003 has slammed Jonathan for blaming his electoral defeat in 2015 presidential race on some persons.
Girei said Jonathan was the architect of his own defeat and not anyone and that he should bury his head in shame.

How Saraki, El-Rufai stopped Buhari from picking me as Vice President – Tinubu

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has revealed that Senate President Bukola Saraki and Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, stopped President Muhammadu Buhari from picking him as his running mate in the 2015 presidential election.
Tinubu’s comments were contained in a book titled ‘Against the Run of Play,’ written by the Chairman, Editorial Board of ThisDay, Olusegun Adeniyi.
He said their reason was that Christians in the North would not accept a Muslim-Muslim ticket.
Tinubu also revealed that El-Rufai wanted Pastor Tunde Bakare as Buhari’s running mate.
They were canvassing arguments that the Christians in the North would not vote for a Muslim-Muslim ticket.
“Nasir el-Rufai was also selling the same argument within the CPC (the defunct Congress for Progressive Change) because at that point, he still wanted to have Pastor Bakare brought in as Buhari’s running mate,” he said.
Tinubu said some Senators and Governors met with him on the eve of the primaries, to confirm if there was an agreement between him and Buhari to run together.
“I told them that it was better to resolve such issue after the primaries, but they wanted to make it a condition for supporting Buhari, which, for me, was very wrong.
“I told them I could not insist on this as a condition for my support for Buhari. I felt that was not right to hold Buhari hostage in this manner.
“I believe the support that we gave was fundamental to Buhari clinching the party nomination. Without that support, a different outcome would have been most likely,” Tinubu added.
Buhari eventually asked Tinubu to present three names for the position, but he only provided Yemi Osinbajo.
“I backed down because I did not want to be depicted as causing a problem. I backed away from the position in order to offer Buhari a name I once raised with him in 2011: that of Professor Yemi Osibanjo,” he added.

Reactions have trailed the abduction of the royal father and his Chief.
According to a frontline traditional ruler in the state, the Akala of Ikaram -Akoko, Oba Andrew Momodu,it was an abomination to abduct a traditional ruler.
He pointed out that Monarchs are the custodians of tradition and representatives of the creator of the universe, which should not be treated in such ridiculous manner.
Akala urged government to recruit more police to protect lives and properties.
He also called for immediate release of Oba Daodu and his chief without any condition attached.

Osborne Towers: EFCC invites ex-governor, others

Detectives are to question a former governor and some high-profile owners of apartments in Osborne Towers, Ikoyi, Lagos where $43.4million was recovered last Wednesday.
Besides, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has identified how the controversial apartment 7B, where the $43.4m was kept, was acquired. Also recovered were £27,000 and N23m cash.
The EFCC has intensified investigation into the roles played by some apartment owners and tenants on how the cash was brought into the Towers, The Nation has learnt.
The anti-graft agency is said to be suspecting that some owners or tenants may have been complicit in the matter.
A source said: “The more we investigate this $43.4m haul, the more we get fresh facts. It has become imperative to interact with some owners or tenants of apartments in the Towers.
“We have invited a former governor and other high-profile owners and tenants for interaction. It is just to ask a few questions on whether or not they were aware of such movement of cash.
“We have clues linking some occupants of the Towers to the cash haul. And in line with sections 16 and 17 of the EFCC (Establishment Act) 2004, we are inviting these landlords or tenants.
“Unless we get to the root of this case, Nigerians may not know the truth or otherwise about the cash.
“We are not saying that those invited are guilty of any infraction or having link with the $43.4million but we need to hear from them – in line with the ongoing profiling of those in the Towers.”
Sections 16 and 17 of the EFCC Act reads: “A person when – (a) whether by concealment. removal from jurisdiction, transfer to nominees or otherwise retains the control of the proceeds of a criminal conduct or an illegal act on behalf of another person knowing that the proceeds is as a result of criminal conduct by the principal, or (b) knowing that any property is in whole, or in part, directly or indirectly represent another person’s proceeds of a criminal conduct, acquires or uses that property or has possession of it, commits an office and is liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term not less than five years or to a fine equivalent 105 times the value of the proceeds of the criminal conduct or to both such imprisonment and fine.
“(1) A person who, without lawful authority (a) engages in the acquisition, possession or use of property knowing at the time of its acquisition, possession or use that such property was derived from any offence referred to in this section, or
(b) engages in the management, organisation of financing of any of the offences under this Act; or(c) engages in the conversion or transfer of property knowing that such property is derived from any offence under this Act; or
(d) engages in the concealment or disguise of the true nature, source, location, disposition, movement, rights with respect to or ownership of property knowing that such property is derived from any offence referred to in this section, commits an offence under this Act and is liable on conviction to the penalties provided in Subsection (2) of this section.
”The penalties for offences under subsection (I) of this section shall be imprisonment for a term not less than 15 years and not exceeding 25 years.”
Meanwhile, there were indications yesterday that the EFCC had been able to trace how the controversial 7B apartment, where the $43.4m was kept, was acquired.
Another source said detectives discovered that the 7B Apartment was bought in the name of a company allegedly owned by the wife of a senior government official.
“Since investigation is still ongoing, we will not release the identity of the owner of the company. Doing so might jeopardise investigation,” the source said, adding that the EFCC had interacted with “some people from the company.”
A National Intelligence Agency (NIA) source said of the apartment: “What happened was that because of the nature of the covert operations which the apartment will be used for, it was necessary to manage the process well.”
Only the Deed of Assignment was acquired by Thabis Ventures Limited on behalf of NIA. “And immediately the process for the purchase of the apartment was completed, the ownership was clearly stated in the name of NIA. All the papers are reflecting NIA too, he said, adding: “The title document is available for anyone to verify.”

Boko Haram kidnaps 22 girls and women in north-east Nigeria

Attackers loyal to faction headed by Abu Musab Al-Barnawi, son of Boko Haram founder Mohammed Yusuf

Boko Haram Islamists have abducted 22 girls and women in two separate raids in north-east Nigeria, residents and vigilantes said.
In the first attack on Thursday, the jihadists raided the village of Pulka near the border with Cameroon where they kidnapped 18 girls.
“Boko Haram fighters from Mamman Nur camp arrived in pickup vans around 6am and seized 14 young girls aged 17 and below while residents fled into the bush,” a Pulka community leader said.
“They picked four other girls who were fleeing the raid they came across in the bush outside the village,” said the community leader who asked not to be named for fear of reprisals.
According to the official, the attackers were loyal to the faction headed by Abu Musab Al-Barnawi, the son of Boko Haram founder Mohammed Yusuf. Barnawi was appointed last year by Isis to replace leader Abubakar Shekau, who had pledged allegiance to the jihadist group in 2015.
Another resident confirmed the raid and said the girls were likely to end up as brides for the fighters. “They didn’t harm anyone during the raid and they made no attempt to shoot people running away from the village,” said the resident.
In the second incident outside the village of Dumba, close to Lake Chad, the jihadists killed a herdsman who had tried to escape after refusing to pay protection money, said Adamu Ahmed, a member of an anti-Boko Haram militia.
“When the Boko Haram gunmen came for the money they realised he had left with everything and they decided to go after him on their motorcycles,” Ahmed said. “They caught up with him near Dumba where they slaughtered him and shot dead 50 of his cattle.
“They took four women from the man’s family and the rest of the herd,” he said.
The promotion of Barnawi revealed divisions in the group, as Shekau had been criticised for mass killings and suicide attacks against civilians.
Barnawi and his right-hand man Mamman Nur, who is seen as the real leader, had promised residents in areas under their control would not be harmed as long as they did not cooperate with Nigerian troops fighting Boko Haram. But in recent weeks the Islamist fighters have intensified raids in areas near Lake Chad, stealing food from residents.
They have also killed several civilians they accused of cooperating with the military.

Apostle Suleman: Stephanie Otobo’s mother reveals those manipulating her daughter

Mother of the alleged estranged girlfriend of Apostle Johnson Suleman of Omega Fire Ministries, Stephanie Otobo, Tope Otobo, has accused lawyers of manipulating her daughter.
The trader also explained why she went to beg Suleman in his Auchi’s church.
however, dismissed claims by her daughter that she was threatened to apologise to Suleman, PremiumTimes reports.
According to Tope, “All those lawyers are using her to get their own names. They should leave my daughter alone. They should leave my daughter out of this matter.
“I am still talking about all those lawyers. They should leave my daughter alone.
“She is not wayward, that is why what is happening is surprising me. Somebody is behind this matter because she was not like that before.
“She is a good child. She loved me and I love her. So, along the way, I don’t know what happened; that is why I said they are manipulating her, using something against her and I want every Nigerian to help me to pray, pray for her that God should deliver her.”
On why she went to beg Suleman, Bukky said: “I beg the man of God to forgive her so that this matter can die off. Because I cannot continue with this (and) the way I am seeing it.
“I don’t want anything of such to happen again. Nobody threatened to kill me or prompted me to do so. I went there on my own to apologise to man of God.
“Nobody threatened me. It is because I am a mother. I did not bring her up this way and the way she is behaving is not normal.
“I was not threatened. I am a mother. I cannot continue to see her in that manner. She has been saying all sorts of things. We are not happy and that is why I went to apologise. I went there alone; nobody threatened me
Recall that Ms Otobo had accused the Edo-born preacher of impregnating and abandoning her.
Following her initial allegation against the preacher, the Canadian-based singer went ahead to release more intimidating details about her alleged romance with Suleman.
