Nigerian surgeon removes baby from mother's womb, operates on her tumor & returns her back

LynLee Hope who suffered from a tumor know a 'sacrococcygeal teratoma'  underwent a crucial operation at 23 weeks and then returned to her mother's womb. She healed and continued to grow until she was born again at 36 weeks. This amazing feat was performed by a surgeon who is  nigerian but  based in the U.S , Dr Oluyinka Olutoye, and his surgeon partner , Dr. Darrell Cass of Texas Children's Hospital

When Margaret Boemer went for a routine ultrasound 16 weeks into her pregnancy with her third child, she found out that things were far from routine.

"They saw something on the scan, and the doctor came in and told us that there was something seriously wrong with our baby and that she had a sacrococcygeal teratoma," the Plano, Texas, mom said in an interview shared by Texas Children's Hospital. "And it was very shocking and scary, because we didn't know what that long word meant or what diagnosis that would bring,"

Sacrococcygeal teratoma is a tumor that develops before birth and grows from a baby's coccyx, the tailbone.  Found more often in girls than boys, this tumor occurs in one out of every 35,000 births.
"This is the most common tumor we see in a newborn," said Dr. Darrell Cass, co-director of Texas Children's Fetal Center and associate professor of surgery, pediatrics and obstetrics and gynecology at Baylor College Medicine. "Even though it's the most common we see, it's still pretty rare."
Booemer had been pregnant with twins, but lost one of the babies before her second trimester so it was a shock at 16 weeks to learn of her daughter's rare birth defect.

"Some of these tumors can be very well-tolerated, so the fetus has it and can get born with it and we can take it out after the baby's born," said Cass. "But about half of the time, they cause problems for the fetus and it's usually causing problems because of a blood flow problem."

Cass explained that the tumor is trying to grow by sucking blood flow from the baby, yet the baby is also trying to grow, too "so it becomes a competition. And in some instances, the tumor wins and the heart just can't keep up and the heart goes into failure and the baby dies," he said.

With a large tumor stealing the blood supply, Boemer's fetus was becoming more ill each day, doctors explained to the expectant mother. Something had to be done.

Although other doctors had advised her to terminate the pregnancy, Cass and his team told her about another possibility: fetal surgery. This option, though, would not be an easy road. Even worse, her baby's chances of survival would be grim.

"LynLee didn't have much of a chance," Boemer said. "At 23 weeks, the tumor was shutting her heart down and causing her to go into cardiac failure, so it was a choice of allowing the tumor to take over her body or giving her a chance at life. It was an easy decision for us: We wanted to give her life.
She was 23 weeks and 5 days pregnant, when Cass and his partner surgeon, Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye, performed the emergency fetal surgery. By this time, the tumor was nearly larger than the fetus. They operated for about five hours.

"The part on the fetus we do very, very quickly," said Cass. "It's only 20 minutes or so on the actual fetus." Most of the time is spent opening the uterus, which he described as "a big muscle lined with membranes. We don't want the mom's health to be jeopardized," said Cass, who explained they work carefully, both making the incision and sewing it up in order "to make that uterus be as sealed and as water tight as possible."
Still, Cass said, the tumor in this case was so large a huge incision was needed to get to it, "so it ended up that the baby was hanging out in the air... Essentially, the fetus is outside, like completely out, all the amniotic fluid falls out, it's actually fairly dramatic," said Cass.

During the surgery, LynLee's heart slowed down to an incredibly low rate.
"It basically stopped," said Cass. He credits the heart specialist, a key member of the team, for giving the right medication and transfusing the right amount of fluid, allowing the surgeons to continue their work. The surgical team removed the bulk of the tumor. When they finished their operation, the surgeons placed LynLee back inside the womb and sewed her mother's uterus shut. It's kind of a miracle you're able to open the uterus like that and seal it all back and the whole thing works," said Cass.

Boemer was on bed rest for the remainder of her pregnancy. Despite her pain, she marshaled her strength and made it another 12 weeks to nearly 36 weeks -- full term -- when Lynlee Hope was born for the second time via C-section on June 6. She weighed 5 pounds and 5 ounces.

After she was born, LynLee faced one more ordeal: removing the bits of tumor that surgeons could not reach, which had begun to grow again.

"At eight days old, she had more surgery, and they were able to remove the rest of the tumor," explained Boemer. LynLee recovered in the NICU and weeks later, arrived in her family home. Baby Boemer is still an infant but is doing beautiful," said Cass, remarking that she is perfectly healthy. His one previous surgery of this kind was also a success. "I think she's about 7 now, and she sings karaoke to Taylor swift -- she's completely normal," said Cass.

A mobile policeman (MOPOL) called Sgt Cletus Suwe Gompil was killed in his personal residence at Jos South local government of Plateau state by some suspected armed Fulani men. The incident happened last Sunday evening at about 8pm at Kwanga community of Jos South local government of the state.

The mobile policeman who is from Ngas tribe from Kanke local government of Plateau central senatorial zone has a wife and three children, and their bread winner was killed in their presence.
The Plateau state police command confirmed the attack and also confirmed that four suspected Fulani men residing in a nearby camp have been arrested and are already helping the police with relevant information.
One of the neighbours to the deceased, Raymond Gukas narrated how the victim was killed:
Quote

“I lived very close to the policeman and last Sunday evening, at about 8pm, I was at home with my family watching television program when we heard a gun shot. I began to wonder who shot the gun, but we were careful not to rush out, after while we started hearing the cry from that direction, and I went to out to discovered that the gun shot we heard was the shot aimed at our policeman neighbour.
Mr. Gukas said,

“we heard that the mopol was also resting with his family at their residence when they heard their dog barking, later on, there was a knock on their door. When the mopol was trying to open the door, his wife warned him not to open the door, but that the mopol said it was too late in the night to exercise such fear, arguing that it could be a neighbour that was knocking.
“But as soon as he opened the door to find out who was there, the assailant grabbed him and dragged him outside. About three of the assailants held him down and asked him where he kept his rifle, the mopol told them he does not come home with his rifle, but they never believed him and so two of the assailants went to his room and asked the family to show them where the man used to keep his rifle.
When the assailants realised the family was not cooperating, they searched his inner room and got his rifle and while in his room they informed those who held the mopol outside that they have found the rifle and immediately, the mopol was shot at close range. Tray assailants remained there to ensure they confirmed him dead, they pushed his body into the gutter, then went to meet those in the room to tell them that they have killed him, and they fled immediately after that.
The assailants allegedly fled with the rifle of the victim.
Quote

“The family only rushed out to see the body of their bread winner in the pool of blood. The wife shouted to attract neighbours who came out and tried to rush him to the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) where the mopol was confirmed dead”
Residents of the Kwanga community recovered from the shock to point accusing fingers on the Fulani group residing close to the village. They made their suspicions known to security agencies. The security agencies raided the Fulani residents and arrested five of them.
Reporters found out that the deceased mopol may have just returned from the North East where he was posted to join the fight against insurgents. He must have returned home with the last one month to rest with his family before the next posting, only to be trailed and killed in the presence of his wife and children.

Late Gompil has only relocated to his personal house where he has put up a four-bedroom apartment to make his family comfortable after several years as a tenant. The public relation officer Jos, DSP Terna Martins said investigation is still on to ascertain the motive behind the attack, the involvement of the suspects and death of the policeman.

The outgoing Miss Anambra, Chidinma Okeke, was a top trending issue on Google search this week, not for winning another beauty pageant, but for a leaked sex video that went viral.
According to a statement by Mr Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager, Anglophone West Africa, the issue was trending from Oct. 19 to Oct. 26.

Kola-Ogunlade said that in the entertainment industry, the internet showed how a #Beauty Queen Became a Hashtag.

“The viral video unveiled a beauty queen’s sexual preference and drew people’s attention.

“The beauty queen went on her social media pages to deny the video.

“She explained that her face was superimposed on an existing picture,’’ he said, adding that the beauty queen said it was an attempt by hoodlums to blackmail her.

The Google manager said that with only a few days to the United States Presidential Election, the world once again witnessed the continuation of the bitter tone which had trailed the campaign.

He said: “at the last presidential debate which held in Las Vegas, Republican candidate, Donald Trump, refused to commit to accepting the elections result if he loses

“He also claimed that the yet to be conducted election was out of his hands and rigged against him.’’

Also top on Google search this week was the coronation ceremony of the newly-crowned Oba of Benin, Kola-Ogunlade said.

Long Live the King! After several weeks of traditional rites, Eheneden Erediauwa was finally crowned as the 39th Oba of Benin, he said.

The Google manager said that the crowned head would now be called Oba Ewuare II after the famous Benin ancestor who was credited with many significant legacies in Benin.

He said that the Benin ancestor was widely claimed to be the greatest king of the Benin Empire. Oba Ghato Kpere… Ise!

Kola-Ogunlade said that in the world of sports, Lionel Messi was one of those who ruled Google search this week.
“Messi, no mercy football star.

“The talented football star was in the news this week for assisting his team, Barcelona, with a hat-trick that led to a 4 – 0 victory against Manchester City.

“He has also been nominated again for FIFA’s Ballon d’or on a 30-main list along with Cristiano Ronaldo and England’s Jamie Vardy,’’ he said.

WizKid da Starboys, in his usual tradition, raised the bar on Google search as he carted away three major awards at the recently concluded 2016 MTV Africa Music Awards, popularly known as MAMA.

“The starboy was named the Artist of the Year, Best Male and Best Collaboration Awards win with Dj Maphorsia and Dj Buckz,’’ the Google manager said.

Who is Antoni van Leeuwenhoek? The Google manager asked.

He said that last week, many Nigerians chose to learn more about Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, a Dutch tradesman and scientist, that was on Google Doodle for his 384th birthday.

“No, he is not alive, but his vision is. He was the first human to observe those `little animals’ we now know as bacteria and microbes and of course the sperm cell,’’ Kola-Ogunlade said.

Man’s eggplant gets stuck while using sex toy in Thailand

An unidentified man was unlucky after a sex toy which he uses to maintain his erection got stuck to his Penis.
According to the Mirror UK, the 30 year old was rushed to a hospital in Bangkok, after his penis got stuck to a metal c**k ring, while treating himself to a nice time at home.
The incident took the doctors three hours using a bolt cutter and a saw to set him free.
Speaking on the incident, one of the volunteer rescue workers, Jack Bansakul said:
‘The man put the metal alloy ring on his penis for some kind of sex game at home, I’m not sure if it was one he’d bought from a shop or something he found in the garage. But he hadn’t measured himself properly and when his penis expanded he could not remove it.’

World Champion Boxer Manny Pacquiao Builds 1,000 Homes For Poor Filipinos

After earning millions for fighting Floyd Mayweather, the boxer and politician used a portion of his earnings to construct homes for 1,000 poor families in his hometown.

Manny Pacquiao is more than a world-class athlete or a Filipino politician. He’s a compassionate activist who paid for 1,000 homes to be built to help out underprivileged families in his hometown.
Earlier this year, Pacquiao proclaimed his good deed on Facebook:
“I’m so happy giving this houses free to my constituents in Sarangani Province from my own pocket more than thousand families are the beneficiaries.”
The Star reports that the ‘born-again Christian’ was inspired to help poor families after duking it out with Floyd Mayweather. Though he lost the boxing match, he still earned millions of dollars in the ‘fight of the century’ and felt it was his duty to give back.
He wrote:
“As faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms, each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others. I’m still building more because I always believe what the bible says offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.”
The act of compassion could be nothing more than a calculated political move, but nonetheless, 1,000 families have secure living spaces thanks to the Senator’s generosity. That, we believe, is worth celebrating.

The wedding reportedly took place in Akwa Ibom State over the weekend...congrats to them..

"For every successful man, his wife's in front, left, right, centre & below. They're not just anywhere, they're everywhere" - Ajumobi

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, his Oyo and Osun States counterparts, Senator Abiola Ajimobi and Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola said that if the nation must make meaningful progress, the family, which is the mirror by which any society is measured, must be strengthened.

The Governors, who spoke on Monday, October 24th, at the opening ceremony of the 16th National Women Conference, organised by the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO), on Monday, at Eko Hotel and Suits said as much as the family is the reflection of the society, government at all levels must give priorities to issues as it affects the women, who are the bedrock of the family.
They must also be empowered to flourish in her career and the home front.
Declaring the conference open, Oyo State Governor Ajimobi said:
"I'll have to disagree with my brother Governor Akinwunmi Ambode that our wives are only in front of us, but for every successful man, his wife is in front, left, right, center and below, they're not just anywhere, they're everywhere,"
In his goodwill message, Governor Ambode said while the importance of the family unit to the overall development of the nation was not in doubt, much emphasis must be placed in the commitment towards strengthening the family unit and building strong moral values.
"The importance of the family unit to the overall development of any nation is not in doubt. The family is the foundation and smallest unit of any nation. The heart and conscience of a nation is formed, to a large extent, in the family. However, the issue is the amount of commitment we, in our individual capacities and as a nation, have shown towards strengthening the family unit. Women are the glue that hold families together and we believe strongly that an empowered woman, with a sense of self-esteem, will be better positioned to make a success of her career and at the same time be a pillar of strength for the family,” Governor Ambode said.
Highlight of the event was the presentation of the Inspirational Woman of the Year Award to Mrs. Tara Fela-Durotoye and the investiture of Senator Oluremi Tinubu as the Grand Matron of COWLSO.

Petrol: N145 per litre not sustainable – NNPC

The Group General Manager, Crude Oil Marketing Department of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mele Kyari, has said that the sale of petrol at N145 per litre is not sustaining due to the current economic recession. Kyari stated this while speaking at the 10th Oil Trading and Logistics Africa Downstream Week in Lagos.

According to Kyari, the current economic downturn has made it impossible to import petroleum products at the current market price and at the current fixed foreign exchange rate and still make profit as well as recovered the capital invested in importation.

He said despite the harsh realities surrounding importation, government isn't planning on increasing the pump price of petrol.
“It is impossible for this government to announce tomorrow that petrol is about N150. This government cannot sustain it. That is the truth. The people will not take that number. But that is why the suppliers now are not importing. It is not about the foreign exchange. We are in subsidy regime absolutely, there is no way you bring product today and take it and sell at N145 and get back your money, and make profit. That is not possible. You can see some marketers saying that fuel is N138. It is because they did not import. Somebody has taken the heat of the price"he said

Jonathan at Oxford University, makes case for youth empowerment 'I worked for next generation, not next election'

Former President Dr Goodluck Jonathan yesterday defended his administration’s Transformation Agenda stressing that it was designed to engage the latent potential in the entire nation, as well as stimulate and enable higher productivity.

Jonathan who stated this yesterday in lecture at the Oxford Union of the Oxford University in the United Kingdom, also said that while serving as President of Nigeria, he worked for the next generation and not for the next elections, as a means of ensuring that Nigerian children had a promising future.

He said:
“While serving as President of Nigeria, I worked for the next generation and not for the next elections. Somebody must sacrifice and work for the next generation otherwise your children's children will suffer the same predicaments as you have.
Jonathan who was speaking to students of Oxford University on youth entrepreneurship, further pointed out that quality education and youth empowerment were at the heart of Africa’s growth and development.
He said further:
“I am excited to be in the midst of some of the World's future leaders to discuss issues relating to youth empowerment and entrepreneurship. The issue of youth entrepreneurship in Africa is very critical, as Africa is the only continent in which we will witness a population boom. Most violent crises in Africa can be traced to a lack of education and opportunities among its teeming youth population. Studies have revealed that there is a symbiotic relationship between youth unemployment and youth restiveness.”
“As a leader, you can decide through your policies to educate the youths, or face the consequences of failing to do so. The Transformation Agenda was conceived to engage the latent potential in the entire nation, and to stimulate and enable higher productivity.”

The former President emphasised that his Administration came up with various programmes to encourage young entrepreneurs including the youth enterprise with innovation in Nigeria (YOUWIN).We reformed the institutions and introduced various mechanisms to stop the problems associated with in our country without much publicity.
“We may not have been perfect, but we did our best, and our best yielded an era of unprecedented economic growth for Nigeria. A growth that proved the truism that a Nation's wealth is not underneath the ground but between the ears of her people. Nigeria was rated as the largest economy in Africa and the 23rd in the world by the World Bank and the IMF, with a GDP above US$570 billion.”
He stated further:
“We identified Nollywood as a sector that can employ many young people and provided a grant of $200 million to boost the industry. As a result, Nollywood became a major contributor to our GDP and in 2014, the industry contributed 1.4% to our GDP.

Jonathan also recalled that as Governor of Bayelsa State and later the President of Nigeria, he asked himself some critical questions:
“Why do individuals that grow up in similar circumstances end up differently, with some as successes and others as failures? Why are some nations rich and some poor? Is the wealth of nations a result of geography, weather, culture, destiny? What could a leader do to effectively lift a people out of the depths of poverty, and enable them to achieve prosperity?
“After much soul searching, I concluded that: wealth is a creation of the human mind properly prepared by education. Any nation that does not spend its wealth and resources to develop the capacity of its youth will be forced to use them to fight insecurity”
He challenged
“contemporary African leaders to see youth entrepreneurship as a collective project transcending national boundaries, adding that “despite incredible challenges, Nigerian youths are achieving great things and placing Nigeria positively in the world map. They inspire us.”

'I don't believe Dasuki stole $2.2 billion' - Former president Jonathan

While responding to questions after his lecture at Oxford University yesterday, Former President Goodluck Jonathan, said he does not believe Former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, can "steal" $2.2 billion as he is being accused of by the EFCC. Responding to a question on Dasuki, Jonathan said
“They said the National Security Adviser stole $2.2billion. I don’t believe somebody can just steal $2.2 billion. We bought warships, we bought aircraft, we bought lots of weapons for the army and so on and so forth and you are still saying 2.2 billion, so where did we get the money to buy all those things?
Yes, there were some issues. Yes, there are still corruption issues but some of it were over blown. I’d say exaggerated and they give a very bad impression about our nation. You cannot say the national security adviser stole $2.2billion. It is not just possible”.
Dasuki was arrested last year and has been in detention since. He is to be re-arraigned in court on November 16th.

Jonathan also stated that after he signed the anti-same sex marriage law in January 2014, no Nigerian has been discriminated.

Young man shot in the leg by Policeman during raid on Okada riders in Ketu, Lagos (photo)

This report was sent in to LIB by an eyewitness. An innocent young man was allegedly shot in the Leg by a Police inspector, during a raid on Okada men in Ketu, Lagos on the 23rd of October, 2016. Not only was he still dragged to the Police station, there was also a failed attempt to cover up the incident. Read below.
"His name is Omojuwa Samuel, a resident of Kosofe at Omojuwa street, Ketu, Lagos and he's just 20 years old. If the Nigerian police wanted to arrest him, they could have just done that without shooting him.
Samuel just came back from watching a football match in his area when he was shot by his house. I was a witness right there. The police men, most of them in polos and only one in Uniform, were conducting a raid on bike men in the area and people around were not even sure about who they were."

"Armed with cutlasses and guns, they were beating all boys around there over a bribe I'm sure they wanted to collect. The street thugs were gathering to react when the Police began shooting to scare them off. Samuel was just in front of his house tying his shoe lace when he was shot in the leg the moment he raised his head. These policemen immediately began to drag him on the floor to the bus stop where their patrol bus was parked, and it was a very long distance."

"They took him to the police station at Ketu and locked him up with a bullet in his leg. When his family members got there, the policemen tried to twist the story, saying the people responsible were not from Ketu police station. They also lied that the case has been transferred to Ikeja. His relatives however struggled to enter and got to know he was actually there."

"The DPO at Ketu police station claimed that the cutlasses they used in beating boys were recovered during their patrol. This was however used to also injure innocent people. He wanted to transfer Samuel to a police hospital so they would remove the bullet and close the case but his family refused and took him to the National Orthodaedic Hospital, Igbobi . He's currently there and is being treated. The bullet hasn't been removed because it's in his bone. His family is the one taking care of the expenses without help from the police."

Police bust Nigerian smuggling and prostitution ring in Italy

Police have arrested 11 Nigerians for allegedly trafficking young women and girls from Nigeria to exploit them as sex slaves in the southern Italian city of Catania.

Police Officer Antonio Salvago said Monday, October 24th, that the victims underwent a voodoo rite to bind them to their debts after they promised to pay up to 40,000 euros ($43,000) for a journey they thought would bring them to a better life in Europe, a rite which made them obey their smugglers and pimps.

The victims, all under age 25 and some as young as 16, traveled through Libya before crossing the Mediterranean by boat with thousands of other migrants
Catania Chief Prosecutor Carmelo Zuccaro says the investigation shows that illegal immigration breeds more serious crimes of exploitation and forced prostitution.

Who agrees with Daddy Freeze on this?

He shared this photo above and wrote;
"Couples above; Charlie boy and lady Di, Maheeda and Hubby.
Couples below; pastor Oyakhilome and former wife, pastor Okitie and former wife.
Looking at the above couples there are so many things I can deduce.

1. Don't judge a book by its cover.  2. The least likely to win very often win.

-----------------------
Is it also safe to ask.....
1. Since Maheeda and Charlie boy succeeded at marriage while these pastors failed, is it better to get counseling from them, rather than the pastors?
2. Is there something they know that the pastors don't?
3. Do the pastors themselves need to be counseled by the couples on top?
4. Are we getting the whole concept of marriage wrong?
5. Does everyone really have someone made for them?
6. Is cooking as important as one pastor claimed?
7. Did the pastors not hear from God before they married their former spouses, or did they hear wrong? You know '56' sounds very much like '66' but they are 2 different numbers.
8. Is sexuality more important than we are are made to believe?
9. Should more women try to emulate Lady Di and Maheeda so their marriages can last?
10. Are you in the wrong relationship or marriage?
11. A pastor I know preaches that oral sex is a sin, is this true and could the lack of it, have anything to do with the breakdown of pastoral marriages?

A 51-year-old woman, Rose Edward, is in police net for allegedly buying a 2-month-old baby for N450,000. Mr Murtala Mani, Akwa Ibom Commissioner of Police, disclosed this on Saturday in Uyo, while briefing newsmen.

Mani who spoke through ASP Cordelia   Nwanwe, the Akwa Ibom Police Command’s spokesperson said that a homeopathtic doctor,  Eneyo Nyang, was arrested in connection with the crime.

He said that Edward from Rivers confessed to have bought the baby because she needed a baby of her own.

Confessing to the crime, the mother of the baby, Comfort  Effiong, said that she sold her baby because there was no one to take care of her. “I sold the baby because of help; I don’t have anybody to help me. My father is late and my mother is sick and I don’t have anybody to help me,” Effiong said. Mani assured Akwa Ibom people that the command would not relent in its effort to curb crime in the state. He warned members of the public wishing to adopt children to follow due process.

Aso Rock of juju, demons: Precidency reacts

In his article in the Guardian newspapers of October 14, 2016, the former Special adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati painted a surreal picture of incredible things that go on beyond the glitz and glamour of the official residence and office of the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, popularly called the Aso Rock.

In that article titled ‘The Spiritual Side of Aso Rock’, Dr Abati who served as President Jonathan’s spokesman for four years recounted strange and some times, tragic occurrences that befell people who work or live in the precincts of the presidential Villa. Recounting personal experiences and those that happened to colleagues while he served in the highest office in the land, Dr Abati gave a depressingly worrisome scenario of the higher spiritual powers that tended to influence or dictate the happenings in the Villa which by extension had dire consequences for the country. He wrote in part: “I can confirm that every principal officer suffered one tragedy or the other; it was as if you needed to sacrifice something to remain on duty inside that environment. From cancer to brain and prostrate surgery and whatever, the villa was a hospital full of agonising patients

“A colleague once told me that I was the most naïve person around the place. I thought I was a bright, smart, professional doing my bit and enjoying the President’s confidence. I spelled it out. But what I got in response was that I was coming to the villa using Lux soap, but that most people around the place always bathed in the morning with blood. Goat blood. Ram blood. Whatever animal blood. I argued. “He said there were persons in the Villa walking upside down, head to the ground. I screamed.

Everybody looked normal to me. But I soon began to suspect that I was in a strange environment indeed. Every position change was an opportunity for warfare. “By the same token, all those our colleagues who used to come to work to complain about a certain death beneath their waists and who relied on videos and other instruments to entertain wives (take it easy boys, I don’t mean any harm, I am writing!), have all experienced a re-awakening…
“When Presidents make mistakes, they are probably victims of a force higher than what we can imagine.

Every student of Aso Villa politics would readily admit that when people get in there, they actually become something else. They act like they are under a spell. When you issue a well- crafted statement, the public accepts it wrongly.”

I have copiously quoted from Abati’s column that is now generating controversy. As a correspondent of the Vanguard newspaper who covered presidents Olusgeun Obasanjo , Umaru Yaradua and  Goodluck Jonathan, I can relate well with some of the stranger than fiction scenario painted by Dr Abati.

But beyond the strange incidence, the foundation of the construction of the villa itself was laid in strange circumstances.

According to a staff of Julius Berger, the construction company that built the Villa, from the very day that the excavation for what is now known as the presidential Villa was made; it was mired in strange incidences. The staff who has worked for the construction company for over thirty years and claimed he was there when the very first excavation began narrated the strange occurrences that marked the first few months. “When we moved in here, it was as  if we were in a war zone. There were multiple incidences of equipment failure, workers developing strange illnesses and in one particularly poignant case, a very senior officer of the company who was brought in from Germany to supervise the construction collapsed and died on site while supervising the uprooting of a particular tree that defied all attempts to remove.

Strangely, his death brought an end to the many equipment failures that we had witnessed over many weeks” he said. Whether the strange incidences that have been noticed in the Villa are products of striking coincidences or handiwork of higher, inexplicable spiritual powers is hard to decipher. But since President Ibrahim Babangida, the first occupant of the presidential Villa left office; subsequent occupants of the sprawling edifice have brought spirituality to bear on their stay in the edifice.

From General Sani Abacha to Abdulasalami Abubakar to Olusegun Obasanjo to Umaru Yaradua down to the present occupant, Muhammadu Buhari, these occupants have had to carry out spiritual cleansing of the place before moving in with their families and hordes of aides.

According to a security officer who served during President Obasanjo and Yaradua’s tenure at the Villa, the spiritual cleansing carried out by the presidents differ from one to the other, depending on the faith of the occupants. “When President Obasanjo came in, different men of God were brought in to pray and anoint every corner of the place before he moved in.

At least that was what we saw in the afternoon. What happened in the night I cannot tell but what I know is that, under Yaradua, different Mallams, some of them said to have been imported from Chad and Niger were brought in to cleanse the place before he moved in with his family too. Three live cows and several rams were buried at strategic positions within the villa. These are fairly common practices that were repeated every now and then” he said. It is perhaps these contending spiritual constellations amongst people of various faiths that have given the Aso Rock the foreboding personae that it has assumed in the minds of some.

But it is not inexplicable only deaths and sicknesses that stand out in the Aso Rock. Strange things happen both at night and day that defy logical explanations. For instance, during the Obasanjo regime, a huge python was found right inside the Council chambers of the Presidential Villa where the federal executive council meeting takes place.

Giving an insight into what happened, a staff of Julius Berger which is in charge of maintaining the Presidential Villa told Saturday Vanguard a cleaner found the python right under the table where the president seats to preside over the federal executive council meeting while cleaning the place on a Tuesday to prepare for the Wednesday meeting. “The python was killed but the cleaner who found it died a few weeks after in mysterious circumstances” the staff explained. Perhaps the greatest witnesses to the strange happenings at the presidential Villa are the security personnel who man every corner of the Aso Rock twenty four hours round the clock.

According to a former body guard to President Goodluck Jonathan, very many security men dread night duties because of the strange things that happen at night in the Villa. “Although we were all heavily armed and trained to wade off any kind of attack, our fear was more of the unknown forces that confront us daily. Sometimes, you hear strange voices of people quarrelling in strange languages but you will never see the people. Sometimes, we will wake up to see blood on the ground, at the fore court of the presidential Villa. At other times, we hear the cry of babies throughout the night. “In one particularly poignant case, we heard banging of doors at the president’s office only to go and see that the president’s office remained securely locked. In other circumstances, even after all the electrical gadgets and lights were turned off at the president’s waiting rooms, the televisions and the lights come on, on their own with the volume at its loudest. Being on duty at night at the president’s office was the most dreaded beat among security personnel in the Villa” a body guard who worked at Aso Villa under President Jonathan said. Even people who come to the villa to see the president or other officials do so with less than noble intentions.

According to a former staff of the Villa, “we see people with different amulets on their body when we notice suspicious behaviours. And some of the people that such amulets are found on were either friends of the president of highly placed government officials. In such delicate situation, we make formal reports to our superiors and allow them deal with it. In few instances, such people are denied access to the villa”. It is not only strange things that go on in the villa. Sometimes the president’s personal security is even threatened by those who are close to him.

According to one account, at the end of a particular function in the briefing room adjacent the council chambers, the president noticed an old friend was amongst the guests that visited and moved to shake his hand. But rather than shake the president’s hand and allow him to move to the next guest, the visitor held unto the president’s hand and it took the intervention of body guards to wrest the president hand that was being held hostage. “It was one of those anxious moments that no body guard wants to be caught in” a security detail who witnessed the incidence told Saturday Vanguard. There is no doubt that some people believe that strange thing happen at the Aso Villa whether they are coincidences or not. But those who don’t believe in superstition or reckon with principalities and powers would not attribute strange happenings to demons.

To them, they are mere coincidences. And not all staff of the Villa would readily confirm strange ailments especially the crash of libido. However, as the seat of government, there are those who believe that there are powers and principalities that occupy high places in that sprawling edifice. The interface between the known and the unknown is bound to have consequences on mere mortals. How we are able to harvest the positive side of these contending powers will always depend on the occupants. But for now, the occupants and workers of the seat of power who fear that demons are in the air must find a way of navigating this treacherous route without losing their minds, limbs or even soul.

My wife belongs to my kitchen, Buhari responds to Aisha’s interview

President Muhammadu Buhari has laughed off his wife Aisha’s comment that she may not support him if he runs for election come 2019.

,I  don’t know which party my wife belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen and my living room and the other room.”

His comments to reporters in Germany prompted German Chancellor Angela Merkel, standing at his side, to give him a short glare and then laughed.

Recall that in an interview with BBC Hausa-language service broadcast Friday, Aisha Buhari had said that her husband did not know many top government appointees in his cabinet. She also accused them of not sharing the vision of her husband’s party, the  All Progressives Congress party. Although she did not mention any names, she however asked people to watch out for them on the television programmes.

Buhari, who was a military dictator in the 1980s, was elected in his fourth run at the presidency in 2015 on the back of a coalition that includes former foes and opportunists who abandoned the former governing party of defeated President Goodluck Jonathan.

Buhari has not said whether he will run again in 2019.
“He is yet to tell me, but I have decided as his wife that if things continue like this up to 2019, I will not go out and campaign again and ask any woman to vote like I did before. I will never do it again,” Aisha Buhari said.

In his comments to reporters, Buhari also said he hopes his wife will remember that he ran for presidency three times before succeeding on the fourth effort. “So I claim superior knowledge over her and the rest of the opposition, because in the end I have succeeded. It’s not easy to satisfy the whole Nigerian opposition parties or to participate in the government.”
Buhari had campaigned on promises to crack down on corruption and turn the tide against the Boko Haram insurgency. His government yesterday announced the first negotiated release of 21 of 218 Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram in 2014.

However, Nigeria’s northeast faces a famine that threatens to kill tens of thousands of children after Boko Haram disrupted the region’s transportation and farming. Some areas remain dangerous and inaccessible.

Nigeria has also fallen into recession amid slumped oil prices and lost its position as Africa’s biggest petroleum producer as militants attacked pipelines in the south.
