Nigerian scientist Deji Akinwande awarded highest research honour by President Barack Obama

A Nigerian professor in the United States, Prof. Deji Akinwande has received the 2016 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) from President Obama, the United States government’s highest honor for scientists and engineers in the early stages of research.

Prof. Akinwande is an associate professor in electrical and computer engineering and the Jack Kilby/Texas Instruments Endowed Faculty Fellow in Computer Engineering in the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin.

Earlier in the year, precisely in February Akinwande was named by President Barack Obama, as one of the recipients of  the 105 recipients of PECASE awards.
He is currently an Associate Professor with the University of Texas at Austin. The current focus of his research explores materials and electronic systems based on 2D atomic layers. He is a co-inventor of a high-frequency chip-to-chip interconnect and an electrically small antenna for bio-electronics.

Speaking to the newsmen on Monday, Akinwande said he was awarded by Obama on May 5, 2016, at the White House, where the 105 researchers were hosted.
According to the White House, Akinwande was awarded for his "outstanding research accomplishments in nanomaterials, graphene device physics, and opto-electronics, and for dedication to the education of future scientists and engineers."

Now in its 20th year, the Presidential Early Career Awards are coordinated through the President’s Office of Science and Technology Policy, which selects winners “for their pursuit of innovative research at the frontiers of science and technology and their commitment to community service as demonstrated through scientific leadership, public education, or community outreach."

Prof. Akinwande is known for his groundbreaking research on nanomaterials, sensors, devices and flexible technology. He is considered one of the top researchers in the world in the areas of graphene, silicon electronics and 2-D nanomaterials for use in flexible electronics. In 2015, Akinwande created the first transistor out of silicene, the world’s thinnest silicon material, and he is continuing to advance the capabilities of computer chips and other electronics.

Prof. Akinwande has been the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Inaugural IEEE NANO “Geim and Novoselov Graphene Prize,” an  IEEE Early Career Award in Nanotechnology, a National Science Foundation Career Award, an Army Research Office Young Investigator award, and a Young Investigator award from the Defense Threat Reduction Agency.

Announcing the winners earlier in the year, Obama said: “These early-career scientists are leading the way in our efforts to confront and understand challenges from climate change to our health and wellness.
“We congratulate these accomplished individuals and encourage them to continue to serve as an example of the incredible promise and ingenuity of the American people.”

According to NUJ Europe Chapter,  Akinwande, who grew up in Opebi Allen in the Ikeja area of Lagos State, left Nigeria as a teenager in 1994, and his novel idea was aimed at building more energy efficient electronic chips to make mobile phones last a week or two without charging.

According to University of Texas at Austin, Deji Akinwande received the PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 2009, where he conducted research on the synthesis, device physics, and circuit applications of carbon nanotubes and graphene. His Master’s research in Applied Physics at Case Western Reserve University pioneered the design and development of near-field microwave probe tips for nondestructive imaging and studies of materials.

Prof. Akinwande has been honored with the inaugural IEEE Nano Geim and Novoselov Graphene Prize, the NSF CAREER award, the Army and DTRA Young Investigator awards, the 3M Nontenured Faculty Award, and was a past recipient of fellowships from the Ford Foundation, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and Stanford DARE Initiative. He is one of the directors of the NASCENT ERC center at UT Austin.

He recently co-authored a textbook on carbon nanotubes and graphene device physics by Cambridge University Press, 2011. His work on flexible graphene systems was selected as among the “best of 2012” by the nanotechweb online technology news portal and has been featured on MIT’s technology review and other technical media outlets.

Ronke Shonde's death: Wife of Lagos state governor speaks on domestic violence

Wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Bolanle Ambode, has condemned in the strongest possible terms, the vexed issue of domestic violence, which has continued to rear its ugly head in the state and across the country. She made the denunciation in Alausa, Ikeja, against the backdrop of Lekan Shonde, who allegedly beat his wife, Ronke, to death at their Egbeda home last week.

Mrs. Ambode lamented that domestic violence in the form of assault on wife, child-battering and other forms of uncivilized behavior against women and children, seemed to have got fresh fancy from some men, who are still living in the primitive times.

She described as totally unacceptable, a situation where a man would callously turn his wife to a punching bag on the flimsy excuse that the helpless woman had either insulted him or refused to carry out his orders. In her words:
“How do you explain a situation where the man you married and one who claims to love you, would descend so heavily on you at the slightest provocation. If he is not complaining about delayed dinner, it is another flimsy excuse that is not tenable anywhere. They do it every now and then even to the extent of killing the helpless woman. For how long will this go on?”
The visibly distraught wife of the governor, advised any woman who found herself in an abusive relationship to retrace her steps when possible, so that she could live to tell her own story. She rejected the common and well-worn excuse of societal stigmatization of women who abandoned unpleasant marriages, retorting that when the woman dies in such a cruel marriage, what then does the society say? According to her,
“Many victims of domestic violence become victims of their own psychological realities. The world of these women is lonely, isolated and filled with fear, with no emotional outlet whatsoever. Sadly, victims wait until it is too late”.
She advised that, we should cease to treat domestic violence as a case of “family affair” and such do not become involved. The fact that our society is patriarchal and values sanctions by culture is not enough reason for this epidemic called Domestic Violence.

Speaking further, she said domestic abuse should be moved from being viewed as a social problem to being viewed as a criminal justice issue. Mrs Ambode commiserated with all victims of domestic violence, including families of those that died, urging any woman going through such troubled marriages to approach the state’s Office of the Public Defender, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Youth & Social Development or the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation for legal assistance at no cost.

'Everything Lekan said in the interview is a lie' - Ronke Shonde's family

Alleged wife killer Lekan Shonde granted an interview with Punch yesterday claiming that he only pushed his wife and didn't beat her to death. He also alleged that the late wife was cheating on him and described to him vividly how her lover slept with her in a hotel in Abuja. He also claimed she was abusive. Ronke Shonde's family say this is not true. A family source said;
"I think what he's trying to do is put up a defence mechanism to make him feel like he's the victim here. Everything he said in the interview is a lie. The family will tell their own side of the story when the time is right. All we want him to do now is show up"

"I have come to the conclusion that most men of today are the weaker sex" - Charly Boy

Charly Boy took to his Facebook page today to write about how he thinks most men of today are the weaker sex and can't control themselves emotionally. How men need women more and if not for 'money or sperm', women really have no need for men. What he wrote below..
'From my marriage counselling experience, I have come to the conclusion that most men of today are the weaker sex, at least emotionally. How many of us can control our emotions that we resort to using our wives as punching bags, abusing alcohol, or other methods of lashing out because we are not emotionally strong enough to hold our cool.
A lot of us can't keep up with both working a full time job and managing a household, raising children to the extent that women do everyday. I know some of you would say, that's not a man's department.
I have come to the conclusion that we need women more than the women need us. If not for our money or our sperm, women really have no real need for us.
Men are big babies because they always want everything to be about them and the women know this and know how to massage/manipulate our ego.
Most men can't really control their sexual urge, that's why some of us can have sex even with our housemaids or anything in skirts.
Male death rates are greater than comparable to female rates for almost all major causes of death. Men die younger from heart disease, cancer, stroke, chronic lung diseases, infections. Men are also much more likely to commit suicide than women and have a greater chance of being murdered or dying in an accident.
Abegi, this is just my take. How Una see this matter, because heavy wahala dey ground o!!!!!'

Photos: Jealous husband poured acid on his wife, claims he found out she was HIV positive

Justine Aisha Kyomugisha died of her injuries at Mulago hospital late last month, after her husband of eight years, Imran Kaliisa poured acid on her. She left behind a seven-year-old daughter. He has been on the run since then until his arrest recently.

According to The  Kampala Sun, on the night of January 7, 2016, a domestic quarrel descended into horror when 27-year-old  Kaliisa doused his wife, a Container Village-based second hand shoe trader, with acid.

The couple shared a home in Mankindye, Barracks Zone for eight years. Kyomugisha's relatives say the couple had been having a long standing feud but they remained supportive nonetheless. However, things took a bad turn when Kaliisa started working in Rwanda six years ago and left his wife.

"At times he would return and spend just a day and go back, sometimes leaving her with nothing," they say.

Her family came to her rescue and helped to set up a second hand shoe business in Coontainer Village so she could take care of herself. To Kaliisa, this was the start of the troubles. He tried to dissuade her from working and urged her to hire an attendant.

Meantime a determined Kyomugisha worked hard and grew her business, expanding to Park Yard and St. Balikuddembe market.

Kaliisa reportedly got tipped off by friends that his wife had another man thus his decision to return to Kampala to monitor her. He started working in Kikuubo last December.

Kaliisa put strict conditions for his wife among which was never to return home late. On that fateful day, Kyomugisha returned home late and Kaliisa accused her of having been out with men.

Zamu Nalumansi, a neighbour to the couple, says on the fateful day the couple got into a fight. Kyomugisha fled to her house for refuge, with her terrified daughter in tow.

As Kyomugisha narrated to her what had happened Kaliisa came in hot pursuit and asked her if she had chosen to flee to her neighbour instead of her parents. He then ordered her to go back to the house and pack all her things and leave.

Unknown to them Kaliisa, like a crafty hunter, was luring his wife to hell. A few steps out of the neighbour's house, with her little girl in tow, Kaliisa, armed with a cup, sneaked up behind and emptied its contents in her face.

As it turned out he had just burnt his wife with acid, some of which splashed onto the little girl's back.

Nalumansi responded to calls for help as her friend screamed in anguish: "Help me 'Taata Shamim' has burnt me with acid!"

Nalumansi too sustained minor burns as drops of acid splashed off Kyomugisha's face.

Police suspect Kaliisa had for long planned the attack and that the acid had been procured and kept nearby.

The criminal investigations boss Katwe police, Benon Ayebare, said a manhunt  was ongoing for Kaliisa who fled after the attack.

Edna Ayitamya, a sister to Kyomugisha cried out, saying it wouldn't be Kaliisa to carry out such a cowardly act after he abandoned his wife and they looked after her and his daughter.

Kaliisa was arrested days ago from areas of Bunyoro after four months on the run. He confessed to the heinous act. He told the Police at Katwe that he always grilled his wife about the numerous phone calls she received at awkward hours of the night, strongly suspecting they were from lovers. She always told him they were only business colleagues. Bothered by the trend, Kaliisa started rummaging threw her belongings to find ‘evidence’ of infidelity.

It was during one of such ‘fishing expeditions’ that he found an HIV status card showing she was positive. All hell broke loose. Kaliisa says when he confronted his wife she denied having knowledge of what he was alleging. Out of anger he resolved to punish her in a manner she would never forget, and set about his evil plan that he executed on the fateful night.
