Nigerian Army General, others arrested over Baga Attack

More than 10 senior Nigerian Army officers, including a Brigadier-General have been arrested and are telling the military hierarchy what they know about the Baga attack by the insurgent group, Boko Haram.

According to the Director of Defence Information, Major-General Chris Olukolade, the senior army officers are being investigated for allegedly shirking their responsibilities during the attack by the militants.

Those arrested are Brigadier-General Enitan Ransome-Kuti, his Chief of Staff Lt. Colonel G.A Suru. Others are the Commanding Officer of 134 and 174 battalions, Lt. Colonel Haruna and a certain Major aliyu.

The two Nigerian Army battalions are under the Multi-National Task Joint Task Force in Baga, attacked by the insurgents. Speaking on the arrest, General Olukolade said that the arrested officers were being investigated because at the time of the attack on the multinational headquarters in Baga, Brigadier-General Ransome-Kuti and his men were fully in charge of the military formation.

He said it was disappointing that the attack on Baga was not repelled by both battalions, despite having the necessary weapons to carry out the necessary operations. On January 3, 2015, suspected members of Boko Haram attacked the base of the Multinational Task Force in Baga, Borno State, dislodging the soldiers there. Reports say the troops were warned to be on alert following intelligence reports that terrorists would strike between January 22 and January 25.

Eyewitnesses said that the attack started around 5am when residents started hearing gunshots as the insurgents tried to gain entrance into the MNJTF premises. Many civilians living in the barracks were said to have been killed during the attack.

Hold Governors responsible for Boko Haram; Buhari has nothing to offer – Maku

labaran-makuFormer minister of information, Labaran Maku, has said that governors and not President Goodluck Jonathan should be held responsible for the insurgency in the Northern part of Nigeria.
Maku, the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Nasarawa State, told newsmen in Awka, the Anambra State capital, that as chief security officers of their respective states who are “unaccountable to the Presidency, the governors are autonomous and closer to the people and as such, should know better than the Presidency what goes wrong in their domains”.
According to Maku, Jonathan should not be held responsible for the insecurity in the country, rather the governors should be in charge as chief executives of their various states and take responsibility of any problem there.
Maku particularly urged those behind the political violence in the country to desist from it as such was no longer fashionable, adding that superior argument and ideas should rather be their greatest political campaign weapons.
Maku condemned the recent attacks on Jonathan in Bauchi and Katsina states when the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate and his team went to the areas to campaign for votes, describing the attacks as “unruly and unfortunate”.
“The president was not supposed to be attacked in any part of the country because he has demonstrated quality leadership which every geo-political zone would attest to.
“Therefore, no right thinking person would have carried out any form of attack on him. His humility and liberal mindedness has come to bear by his condoning the attack with calmness,” he said.
Maku called on the community leaders, traditional rulers, civil societies groups and youths in the country to rally round Jonathan in his bid for re-election as his administration has touched transformable every sector of the economy.
The APGA gubernatorial candidate insisted that Jonathan was the best candidate at the moment, pointing out that Gen. Mohammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of All Progressive Congress (APC) had ruled about 30 years ago without any meaningful achievement.
According to Maku,“The Nation is coming out of the cage of Buhari who sacked lots of civil servant and brought shame to civil service, who created laws and Journalist was arrested and detained indiscriminately to mention but a few.

“In fact there is nothing good for him to offer; what he could not do in his 40s is it in his 70s that it will be realized?” He queried.
He stated that he voluntarily resigned his appointment to seek God’s help to salvage his people from the shackle of mercenary.

Maku explained that he joined APGA to run for the gubernatorial election in his state, Nasarawa as he suffered politics of religion and ethnicity on the platform of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Maku added that politics should not be based on religion or ethnic group, but that candidates should be considered by their capabilities and commitment to service.

“APGA is the fastest growing party in Nasawara and my entrance into the party has restored political hope for the people,” the former minister stated.

Tinubu reveals he gave up his presidential ambition for Buhari

Tinubu
Tinubu
National leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, yesterday revealed that he sacrificed his presidential ambition for party’s flag bearer, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd).
Tinubu, who is a former governor of Lagos State disclosed this while addressing a crowd of APC supporters at the party’s presidential rally in Lagos.
Asserting that Nigeria is currently facing an economic crisis and an internal war, the former governor reasoned that this throws up the need for a person with Buhari’s experience considering the retired general’s reputation of anti-corruption and military warfare.
According to Tinubu, “People define patriotism as putting the country first but this is what the ‘Poverty Development Party’ refuses to understand. We chose Buhari not because Bola Tinubu is not interested in the Presidency. I am capable, competent, qualified, younger and richer but there comes a time that people must make sacrifices for their nation.
“I prayed that Nigeria would get better and we would not need a man like him (Buhari). But today, we are in a great crisis; we face a lot of challenges. When South Africa was in a great dilemma and was about to disintegrate, they called Nelson Mandela of 74 years old.
“He used his wisdom to save his country. When the United States was in economic depression, they called 73-year-old Ronald Reagan because he was frugal and incorruptible.
“When America was faced with depression and war, they called a retired General, Dwight Eisenhower, to rescue the country and the country was returned on a path of success. When France was faced with war and economic depression, they called a retired General, Charles De Gaul, to rescue the country,” he cited.
Stressing that Buhari was still qualified to rule the country whether he presented a certificate or not, Tinubu asked, “So what do we need now? Buhari. This is the time for us. General Buhari, whether you are qualified or not qualified, we are
calling you to come and rescue us in Nigeria.”

For the Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola who also spoke at the rally, President Goodluck Jonathan had done nothing for the people of the state despite the fact that the President got over 1.2 million votes from the state in 2011.
He alleged that every project that the Federal Government was supposed to have assisted Lagos in executing had been frustrated by the Jonathan administration thus called on the people of the state to vote for the APC at all levels.

The presidential candidate, Buhari, while speaking eventually, described the failure of the PDP-led Federal Government as unprecedented in the history of Nigeria.
He said further, “We all know what we have gone through in the past 16 years under the PDP. The APC has identified three core problems that must be tackled immediately.
First is insecurity, two is the destruction of the economy and three is corruption.

“But whatever we have to do, we will have to secure Nigeria first. What is happening in the North-East where hundreds of people are being killed is unacceptable. We known that
the Nigeria Police and the Nigerian Army are capable of bringing peace and stability into the country but they just need good leadership,” Buhari stated.

February elections will not be postponed – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has assured Nigerians that next month’s general elections will not be postponed under any guise.
The President gave the assurance while debunking allegations by the All Progressives Congress, APC that the ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party, are involved in surreptitious schemes to postpone the February 14, Presidential election.
The assurance was conveyed in a statement by the president’s Special Adviser on Political Affairs, Prof Rufai Ahmed Alkali.

The president said that it was the APC through its members and supporters that has been doing everything possible to frustrate the conduct of a free and fair electoral process and not PDP or the presidency.
According to him, the APC has been breaching the Abuja Peace Accord which all the presidential candidates subscribed to, with impunity.
The statement emphasized that President Goodluck Jonathan has been receiving unprecedented support since he embarked on the nationwide campaign and he is fully prepared for the election with the PDP.
“The attempt to denigrate the Presidency of Nigeria and drag it down the cesspit of vile propaganda and rumour mongering is unfortunate and signpost’s the APC’s disregard for our revered institutions.
“Nigerians have seen President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan criss-cross the length and breadth of the country in the last one month to rousing receptions everywhere. This certainly is not the sign of someone who is frightened about elections or unprepared for same.
“From our tours and the unprecedented outpour of goodwill, we are confident of a wider margin of victory than ever before. We are ready and fully prepared for this election.
“We wish to draw the attention of Nigerians to the fact that it is the APC and their unruly supporters that have been doing everything possible to frustrate the conduct of a free and fair electoral process.
“They have consistently violated the Abuja Peace Accord through violent conducts in Katsina, Bauchi, Taraba, Gombe and Plateau states.

“They have engaged in unprovoked attacks on our billboards in Lagos State. They have done all these to trigger a reaction from our supporters and create an enabling environment for the truncation of the elections.

“It is therefore a great irony that those who have consciously worked to frustrate the February 14 elections are the ones crying out the most and accusing others of the plans to shift the polls.
“Nigerians have been assured by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, that preparations for the elections are on course. We therefore have no doubt that the elections will be a huge success, much to the disappointment of the naysayers,” Alkali

“We wish to assure Nigerians that the President is committed to a peaceful and successful conduct of the February 14 polls and will not be distracted by tissues of lies and cocktails of deceit from people who have run out of ideas on how to move our country forward.” Daily Post

Akwa Ibom will give Jonathan 100% votes – Akpabio

Akpabio-650x400The governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Godswill Akpabio has promised the national leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP that his state would vote the party 100 per cent in the forthcoming elections.

Akpabio made the promise while addressing the PDP presidential campaign in in Uyo on Friday, assuring President Goodluck Jonathan of his reelection no matter the amount of propaganda against him by the opposition.
“In Akwa Ibom, we will give you 1.67 million votes as valentine gift. Nigeria will not go backward. In the midst of distraction, you have done well in human empowerment, transportation, education and agriculture.
“You have proved that you read to Ph.D level by your action. Education matters”, Akpabio said.
Also speaking at the rally, the South-South Coordinator of the PDP presidential campaign organisation, Gov. Liyel Imoke of Cross River, said Jonathan administration had moved Nigeria forward.
Imoke stated that PDP governors in the South-South zone had performed creditably well and would deliver PDP in the coming elections, assuring the president that the zone will vote massively for him.
On his part, Dr Amadu Ali, the Director-General, PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, called on Akwa Ibom people to drive away any party that was not PDP.

“PDP has done very well. Goodluck has refurbished the moribund railway and undertaken educational reforms,” Ali said, urging the people of the state to keep faith with PDP in order to benefit from agriculture that would be the target of revenue generation for the next administration.

You have admitted your failure – APC tells Jonathan

2 (3)The All Progressives Congress, APC has said the reaction of President Goodluck Jonathan to the challenge by Governor Rotimi Ameachi of Rivers State was an admittance of failure.

The party, in a statement released by the Director of Media and Publicity of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Organisation, APCPCO, Mallam Garba Shehu, asked, “what else can be a signpost of failure if a president comes back after five years in office and cannot point a finger at a single project he has initiated in an entire state?”
According to Shehu, “it is bewildering that President Jonathan could tender such a pedestrian excuse for not developing Rivers State because he doesn’t want to be seen as a sectional leader.
“If we must report the president by his words, he said he didn’t develop Rivers State because he wanted to avoid being accused of developing only his area of the Niger Delta.
“Of course, we know that is not the truth. The president’s statement is false and totally insulting to the intelligence of Nigerians.”
The APC Presidential Campaign Organisation further explained that President Jonathan’s excuse was an acknowledgement of Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s consistent position accusing the president of bringing no development to Rivers State.
Expatiating on Jonathan’s pretext for not developing Rivers State to avoid being accused of favouring Niger Delta states, the APC presidential campaign team also threw a challenge at President Jonathan to produce concrete evidence of other states that he has developed since he became president in 2010.
“The APCPCO wants to advise the PDP to come clean to admit the colossal failures of the Jonathan-led administration. We offer this advice because Jonathan’s government has lost the trust of Nigerians as a result of its incompetence and non-performance,” Shehu stated.

We are non-partisan – NEDG replies APC

buhari and jonathanThe Nigeria Elections Debate Group, NEDG, yesterday reacted to fears raised by the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Organization, APCPCO, that made its presidential candidates, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to boycott the 2015 General elections debates.
The group insisted that it was non-partisan as alleged by the opposition party, adding that there was no basis for the APC or its candidates to refuse honouring an invite to feature in the on-going debates.
NEDG’s Chairman of Media and Publicity Committee, Mr Tony Akiotu in a statement he issued in Abuja, explained that the activities of the group were not influenced by its Chairman, Shola Omale, even though he is the Director-General of federal government-owned Nigeria Television Authority, NTA
The NEDG Spokesman clarified that Mr. Omale happened to be the Chairman of the group by virtue of his position as the Chairman of BON, an office which oscillates between the D-G of NTA and that of Voice of Nigeria, VON.
Mr. Akiotu went on to state that the founder of Daar Communication owners of African Independent Television, AIT, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, though a member does not influence the group nor its activities.
He insisted that NEDG was an independent body that is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC,
and has members drawn from the Nigerian Guild of Editors, Nigerian Union of Journalists, the Transition Monitoring Group as well as the Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria, BON.

It pleaded with the APC to reconsider its position, promising that the debate would provide an opportunity for its presidential candidate and his running mate to market themselves to the Nigerian electorates.

Court declares deployment of soldiers for election duties illegal

court_logo_642-300x224A Federal High Court sitting in Sokoto, the Sokoto State capital, has declared that it will amount to illegality and highly unconstitutional for the Federal Government to deploy the Nigerian military during the forthcoming general elections in the state.
In his ruling, Justice Mohammed Rilwan, who delivered the judgment, said that other than for the purposes of protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity, there is no constitutional provision that allows for the deployment of the military for elections.
The suit was instituted by the Deputy Speaker of the Sokoto State House of Assembly, who also represents Goronyo constituency, Barrister Bello Goronyo of the All Progress Congress, APC.
According to the Judge, if the federal government wants to deploy soldiers for election purposes, it must approach the National Assembly, which would enact such a law

Buhari was never stoned in Lagos - APC

Press release from APC regarding the alleged stoning of Buhari at his Lagos rally today...
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has denied the concocted story by former Minister of State for Defence Musiliu Obanikoro that the party's presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, was pelted with stone during the party's rally in Lagos, saying a lie has never worn a bolder face.
In a statement issued in Lagos on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said Gen. Buhari and other top leaders of the APC rode in a open bus from the Palace of the Oba of Lagos to the Teslim Balogun Stadium venue of the rally, to great cheers from Lagosians who lined the route.

''Not once was he pelted with stone during the almost two-hour ride. It is obvious that those who were paid by Mr. Obanikoro to stone the General failed to deliver. We therefore urge him to seek a refund of whatever money he paid to his hired hands to pelt Gen. Buhari with stones,'' it said.

APC said Obanikoro's statement on an imaginary attack on Gen. Buhari in Lagos must be his own way of saying 'thank you' to his masters for nominating him as Minister on Friday, as his reward for ceding the gubernatorial ticket he claimed to have won to Jimi Agbaje.

The party thanked the good people of Lagos for turning out in unprecedented numbers to welcome Gen. Buhari to Lagos, saying the Centre of Excellence has never witnessed such a huge and cheery crowd.

Stop Boko Haram insurgents before you arrest me -Tompolo replies TY Danjuma

TompoloFormer Niger Delta militant, Government Ekpemupolo, otherwise known as Tompolo has reacted to the recent call by Gen. TY Danjuma for his arrest for reportedly beating war drum.
Tompolo in a statement by his Media Adviser, Paul Bebenimibo, wondered why Danjuma, who did not condemn the stoning of Jonathan’s convoy in Katsina and Bauchi states, would want them arrested.
He asked, “Is Gen. Danjuma not aware of the peaceful atmosphere when Gen. Buhari visited Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa states for campaign? Why is it that President Jonathan’s convoy was attacked in Kastina and Bauchi states without any provocation?
“Where was this so-called statesman when the APC campaign Director General, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, threatened to form a parallel government if Jonathan wins the 2015 elections?”
Ekpemupolo said that Danjuma should be reminded that the treaty that brought the Southern and Northern Protectorates together in 1914, expired last year.
He added, “Let Gen. Danjuma and his cohorts know that they will not see any Ijaw man, Igbo and others to fight on their side if the war that they are planning breaks out.
“And finally, Gen. Danjuma and his cohorts should know that I remain resolute on my position in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, that President Goodluck Jonathan must win this election for Nigeria to continue to stay together.”
Similarly, the Ohaneze Ndigbo also blasted Danjuma and called on him to worry himself more with ending the destructive activities of Boko Haram in the North-East.
The Secretary General of the group, Joe Nworgu, told Punch that the arrest of Ekpemupolo and Dokubo-Asari was not the solution to the security problem in the country.
He said, “They should prevail on all those behind the insurgency in the North to stop. Let them do that and not to call for the arrest of people who are merely issuing verbal threats.
“The group they armed are destabilising the country. Their men are already armed and fighting and embarrassing the country. These ones are only issuing verbal threats.

“Luckily, Danjuma is in charge of the relief funds for victims of the insurgency. He is in a better position to know those that should be cautioned”.

CJN counsels EFCC to investigate thoroughly before approaching courts

CJN
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has been tasked on the thorough investigation of cases before filling them in court to avoid turning the courts to holding facilities.
This charge was given by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, on Thursday when the Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Lamorde, and other officials of the Commission paid him a courtesy visit.
According to a statement released on Thursday in Abuja by Mohammed’s Special Assistant, Media, Ahuruaka Isah, the CJN said that the unfortunate situation is that the judiciary is at the receiving end of all manner of persecution and condemnation from victims and the public, adding that the public are left with the impression that the courts are the perpetrators of the justice denied.
“To reiterate, if for any reason, the prosecution is not ready to proceed with the case, then the matter should not be brought to court at all rather than leaving the public with the impression that the judiciary is not performing its role in curbing corrupt practices in Nigeria.”

“The judiciary is required to adjudicate in matters involving corruption when only necessary to do so. The courts are not intended to descend into the arena. We are not meant to seek out the scourge with a view of stamping it out, no matter how much we would like to do so.”

PVCs: SAN advocates public holiday to ease collection

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Sebastine Hon, has asked both the federal and state governments to declare public holiday in order to fast track the distribution and collection of the Permanent Voter Cards.
Hon, in a statement on Thursday, warned that if the suggestion was not heeded, the ongoing debate on the shifting of the February polls anchored on poor level of collection of PVCs by registered voters could spark violence in the country.
The SAN, who said he was opposed to the call for the postponement of the February polls, asked state governors to take the lead by declaring public holidays for the purpose of PVC collection in their states.

He cited the provisions of section 2(2) of the Public Holidays Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as empowering state governments to declare such holiday.
He stated, “There is no single doubt that much disputation has been visited on the Nigerian political landscape, following the calls for and against shifting the February general elections. There is also no doubt that if not carefully managed, this debate and, a fortiori, any attempt to shift the said polls, may snowball into a political violence of unquantifiable proportions. May that day never come again in Nigeria!
“The dispute seems to be centered on the fact that many Nigerians have not collected their permanent voter cards. Suggestions that the Federal Government should declare some days as public holidays to enable registered voters who are yet to collect their cards to do so have so far not been heeded, even as time for the elections is fast approaching.
“One sure way out is for the various state governments to individually designate some days as public holidays for this all-important exercise to be carried out by Nigerians wishing to exercise their civic responsibilities.
“The power of state governments to designate some days as public holidays is derivable from section 2(2) of the Public Holidays Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, which is to the following effect:

‘(2) Subject to section 1 of this Act, the governor of a state may by public notice appoint a special day to be kept as a public holiday in the state concerned or in any part thereof, and any day so appointed shall be kept as a public holiday.’”
Meanwhile, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ogun State, Chief Timothy Ibitoye, has said that those who registered with the commission in the state and are yet to receive their PVCs will collect them before the February 14 election.
He said this in Abeokuta during the meeting with women groups in the state.
He also said those who had lost their Temporary Voter Cards would also collect their PVCs after they must have filled the attestation form.
He said, “Those whose names appeared on the displayed voter register but did not see their PVCs, the cards will soon arrive and will be distributed accordingly.
“All those who have lost their Temporary Voter Cards can equally pick their PVCs after filling the attestation form.”

He said the commission was leaving nothing to chance in its planning and noted that the sensitisation programme for women was organised because of their numerical strength.
Ibitoye, who was represented by the administrative secretary of the commission, Mr. Dickson Atiba, said the women’s active participation in the electoral process would make a lot of difference for Nigeria .

“One could rightly conclude that the era of rigging and corruption-ridden elections are over in Nigeria,” he said.
The head, Gender Desk Office of the commission, Mrs. Adeola Osikomaiya, advised women to move beyond the level of clapping and dancing at political rallies and take active part in politics by vying for elective positions.
Osikomaiya said, “As women, we need to move beyond clapping and dancing at political rallies, and come out to contest.

“It is important to note that despite the large population of women in Nigeria, their participation in politics and decision-making has been sad. In 2007 general elections, we have only seven per cent of the elective positions occupied by women, while in 2011 it was eight per cent.”

Buhari is an illiterate – Okupe blasts APC candidate for boycotting NEDG debate

Doyin Okupe
Doyin Okupe
The Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe has described the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Party, APC, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari as an illiterate.

Okupe was reacting to the plan by the opposition party to boycott the presidential debate organised by the Nigeria Election Debate Group (NEDG) over what they tagged as ‘unhidden bias’.
Okupe claimed that APC decided to avoid the debate to save Buhari from shame, as he did not have record of performance, education and eloquency needed for a debate to match President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Reacting via his Twitter handle, controversial Okupe tweeted; “If APC didn’t withdraw from the debate, they would have been stupid. Their candidate has no record of performance. Neither is he educated nor eloquent”.
DAILY POST reports that the All Progressives Congress (APC), had on Thursday said it would not participate in the ongoing public debates on national television and radio stations organised by the Nigeria Election Debate Group (NEDG).
It alleged that the Nigeria Election Debate Group (NEDG), co-ordinating the debate, was fraught with fundamental errors from the outset, according to a statement signed by Malam Garba Shehu, the Director Media and Publicity of the APC Campaign Organisation.

The statement said its decision to boycott the debates ”is because of the unhidden bias and campaign of calumny by some key organisers of the programme against the corporate political interest of the party and its candidates”.

Over 14,000 PVCs stolen in Rivers state – INEC

imageThe Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Rivers State says over 14,000 Permanent Voters’ Cards, PVCs, have been stolen by thugs in the different parts of the state.
INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Rivers State, Gesila Khan said the stealing of PVCs had become a source of worry for the election umpire.
Khan in an interview with the media in Port Harcourt also said despite all odds, INEC had achieved about 80% distribution of the PVCs in the state.
While condemning the excesses of the PVC thieves, Khan noted that the cards could not be used except they were in the possession of their owners.
She assured that over 500,000 PVCs would be distributed in the state before the general elections in two weeks time.
“All the cards that are being snatched are useless and meaningless because we are going to use a new system called card readers.
“Your card readers are just like the ATM cards. You take it there and they slot it in to confirm its yours before you are allowed to vote.
“So if you go there with another person’s voter’s card, it is meaningless. So I’m advising those of you with other people’s cards to return them to the Local Government offices.

“I’m appealing to Rivers people because we have lost a lot of cards. We have lost more than 14,000 PVCs and its so bad. This is one of the highest figures in the federation,” Khan said

“Those saying I’m behind Boko Haram are mad” – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday said those accusing him of backing Boko Haram were insane.
The President stated this during his campaign rally in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.
Jonathan said that he had no reason to sponsor the killing of children, women and the aged as he had nothing to benefit from such actions.
“In 2011, I had two times the number of votes I had in Bayelsa State. Why should I want to reduce that number of votes?” Jonathan quipped.
“Only a mad person can insinuate that the president is supporting Boko Haram”.
Condoling the people following over the persistent Boko Haram attacks, Jonathan promised that Adamawa would be the first among the three states that would be completely liberated from the insurgents.
Jonathan informed the gathering that Michika, one of the remaining two local governments in the hands of the insurgents, had been liberated.
“We are totally committed to the liberation of Adamawa state. “Adamawa will be the first state that will be freed. As we are talking to you Michika Local Government area has been recaptured by our gallant soldiers. The remaining local government, Madagali will, insha Allah, be recaptured very soon. I feel so burdened about the excesses of Boko Haram.”

Jonathan, who promised to make massive investment in Agriculture and other key sectors for the rapid development of the state, urged the people to massively vote their gubernatorial candidate, Nuhu Ribadu, for development to be solidly rooted in the state.
“I knew him when I was a deputy governor and as a governor I monitored him till today. He has unique attributes. I believe he will join us to fight insecurity in Adamawa state,” Jonathan said.

The president added that Ribadu has the energy, intellectual capacity and wide range of network across the globe to rout Boko Haram insurgency

Nigeria’ll Move Forward Again – Buhari

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, General Muhammadu Buhari has expressed confidence that Nigeria will move forward again.
Buhari said this while expressing gratitude to Nigerians for believing in him and giving his campaign a rousing welcome everywhere he went.
...
He said this in a statement signed on his behalf by the Director of the APC Presidential Campaign, Mallam Garba Shehu, in Abuja, on Thursday.

According to him, the huge reception his campaign trails have received in all the states visited across the country thus far, indicates how desperately Nigerians are yearning for change.
Buhari said, “I appreciate the trust and confidence in me. Our country shall move forward again. The country is tired of try and error leadership that is imbued with absolute corruption.
“Let your vote count because it is the only instrument we have to fight for the change we so earnestly desire.”
He also thanked Nigerians for having confidence in him to right the several wrongs bedeviling the country.

The statement partly read: “This is to appreciate the people of this great country for the wide acceptance to vote for change in the coming election.
“The issues of corruption, insecurity, lies, weak economy among several atrocities and damage that have been done to the country are enough reasons for change.
“The saying that you can fool the people sometime, but you can’t fool the people all the time is applicable here.

“After nearly 16 years of democracy, what we have today is unacceptable: our youths are roaming the streets with no job and poverty visible everywhere; the missing $20 billion oil money, the missing Chibok girls, the ill-equipped military to fight insurgency, corruption in high places, lack of vision and clueless regime of governance are not acceptable to Nigerians.”
These, he said, are more than enough reasons to fire up the vortex of change in the minds of our people.

Ekiti Youth Group Warns Fayose Over Students Attack

A socio-political group in Ekiti State, Ekiti Youth Vanguard, has vowed to hold Governor Ayo Fayose responsible if any untoward fate befell the injured students’ leader, Comrade Adeleke Samson, alias Obama, currently in an intensive care unit at an Ondo hospital.

Thugs were allegedly sent after Adeleke and his colleagues for endorsing the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) at the rally held in Ado-Ekiti last Saturday.
The APC had fingered the Governor as the one responsible for the attack on Samson; the National Vice-President, External, National Association of Nigerian Students, Tosin Ogunkuade; a former Chairman, NANS Joint Campus Committee, Ekiti State, Oluwadamilare Bewaji, and Idowu Odebunmi.

A statement by the spokesperson of the EYV, Charles Fakunle, said, “We read in the newspapers and social media about the gruesome attack on a Students’ Union Leader, Comrade Adeleke Samson (Obama), by suspected thugs of Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose.
“His offence was that he attended General Muhammadu Buhari’s Presidential rally which held last Saturday and joined other student leaders to endorse him.
“The thugs trailed Obama and his colleagues to Ikogosi Ekiti where they were brutally attacked with machetes and axes. It was in this process that Obama was abducted and taken to the bush where he was dealt machete cuts on his head which almost broke his skull. His other colleagues escaped by the whiskers and ran to Aramoko police station to report the incident.
“To add insult to injury, his colleagues, Ogunkuade Tosin, Odebunmi Idowu, Oloye and one other were arrested by the police in Aramoko when they went to report there.

“The fifth student, Bewaji Damilare, who went to check on them was also arrested and all were thereafter transferred to Ado-Ekiti police headquarters.”
Fakunle wondered why the students leaders that had been branded as “armed robbers” by one of Fayose’s aides were released without charging them to court.
“We wish to alert all men of good conscience to come to the aid of the students who have become endangered species in Ekiti State simply because they support the candidacy of General Muhammadu Buhari.

“The right to support a candidate of choice based on personal conviction is guaranteed by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“There is no reason why Governor Fayose should send thugs to go after those who don’t share his political belief, neither can he explain why he should lead thugs from town to town to shoot sporadically and harass political opponents in a democracy that is supposed to guarantee freedom of choice.”

Fakunle urged Fayose to tread softly, warning that the governor will incur the wrath of Ekiti youth if anything bad happened to Adeleke who was still unconscious in the hospital.
He also demanded an unreserved apology from the Police to the students “who were unjustly detained after being attacked while they (Police) left the thugs who attacked them to go scot-free because they are untouchable!
“The police must fetch the thugs who attacked Comrade Obama and bring them to book without further delay while we pray God to spare the life of the maimed student leader,” Fakunke added.
